Deci ce facem in rubrica asta?

KeymasterSoccer success – Romanian immigrant Eduardo Badescu is making strides in Canada as a successful pro soccer coach
by Glen Kirby
My name is Eduardo Badescu and I came [to Canada] from Romania. I was born there in 1960 and came to Canada at the age of 19. Playing soccer in Romania, I really developed a love of the game. It’s really a way of life. It’s like a religion.
I left because, in my head, I believed at that time that I could not really develop and fulfill myself as a soccer player in Romania. Looking back, it’s probably the best thing that I ever did. My dream was literally to play professional soccer. That was my dream.
So I went to Italy. This way, I had to wait three to five years to get a paper. Then I could be able to play in that country. In the meantime, that’s when I found out that Canada was preparing to open a professional soccer league. I thought, “Professional soccer in Canada … I should be able to make that, no problem.”
I was the one of the first players to be drafted and be signed by [soccer team] the Winnipeg Fury. So that’s how I got involved in a Canadian soccer league. It was probably the highlight of soccer in Canada for me. Then I decided to go into another business — open a restaurant. Then I opened and operated a restaurant for five years.
[Having a restaurant] was again very good for money; it was very good for everything. It just was a lot of hopes. [It] was 24 hours [of work every day]. I did that for four years, then I realized that more important than money is actually family.
You know you get to that part of your life, where you understand this. I decided, “OK, so I cannot work in political science” … so I choose to go into something that I love, which was soccer. I received a letter from Europe, inviting me, if I wanted, to [obtain] a UEFA [Union of European Football Associations] pro license.
I was very excited and, after looking at it, it was very hard to do, because you have to go [to Europe frequently over] 24 months. It was very hard. But by discussing it with my wife and my family, I decided to go for it. That’s what I now do for a living and I do the best I can do.
I could not achieve [in Romania] what I have achieved here, the lifestyle that I [enjoy], plus the education that I got here would be very hard to get in Europe, especially in political science.
I don’t think very many people can say that their hobby is actually their work. It really doesn’t feel like work to me. It feels like every day I’m doing something that I love, and I get paid for it. But the money really isn’t important in my mind. It’s always the work and what I enjoy.
That’s why it’s very important to have that passion — the love for the game. In order to achieve anything in life, if you have the passion for what you do, you’re going to achieve it.

Dumnezeu să-i odihnească în pace !Eduardo Badescu si familia
